Saving lives - MAking Change

In wake of the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando In June of 2016, Blood is Blood announced a Gay Alliance Blood drive to be held on July 27th, 2016 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the American Red Cross WNY Chapter Headquarters in Buffalo, NY.  Jordan Moll-Vigrass, Founder of Blood is Blood & Matthew Crehan Higgins, Executive Director of the Pride Center of WNY spoke at the event to raise awareness of existing archaic policies preventing many gay men from donating blood.

On June 12, 2016, 49 people were killed and over 50 others were wounded in a terrorist attack at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.  While members of the community came forward to help with the urgent need for blood supply donations, many members of the LGBTQ community were turned away.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016 replaced the lifetime ban on gay blood donors with a new policy of only accepting donations from gay men who have been celibate for a minimum of 12 months.

Gay and bisexual men attending the Blood is Blood drive but restricted from donating blood were encouraged to bring friends and family members eligible to donate to the blood drive, due to the overwhelming support from the community Moll, decided that Blood is Blood would hold a Blood is Blood drive Annually the last Wednesday of July each year as July is Blood Donation Month.

Since July 2016, Blood is Blood has held 2 additional blood drives in Buffalo, NY bringing in 132 donors saving over 396 lives!
